Stick-on wheel weights usually fall off because the tape never bonded to the wheel itself. Something sat between the adhesive and the metal: brake dust, tire lube, silicone dressing, old tape residue, a film left by a cleaner or a shop rag, or moisture. A cold wheel, light pressure on the weight, and a fresh or flaking coating make it worse. The fix is a clean, dry bond area and the same prep step on every wheel, not a heavier weight.
What gets between the weight and the wheel?
- Brake dust and road grime on the inner barrel.
- Tire mounting lube and silicone tire dressing that migrates onto the rim.
- Old adhesive and foam left behind when the last weight came off.
- A film from the cleaner itself, or from a rag that came back from the laundry with residue in it.
- Water from a wash or a wet bay.
The tape grabs whatever it touches first. If that is a layer of grime, the weight is stuck to the grime, and heat, water, and wheel speed peel it off later. That is why a weight can look fine at delivery and be gone a week after.
How should a tire shop prep the bond area?
Remove heavy grease, oil, tire lube, silicone dressing, and old adhesive first. Then use a wheel-weight adhesion cleaner as the final prep. With Prep N Stick Quick Dry the method is:
- Remove the old weight and scrape off the bulk of the old adhesive.
- Spray the old bond area and wipe it clean.
- Spray the clean bond area again and let it dry for a few seconds. Do not wipe off this final application.
- Apply the new weight.
No water rinse is required. The second spray is the step that gets skipped when shops shorten this to spray, wipe, install. Leave it on and let it flash off.
What else causes repeat comebacks?
- Installing on a cold wheel. Follow the weight maker's temperature guidance.
- Not pressing the weight down along its full length.
- Setting the weight on a curved, ridged, or uneven spot where the tape cannot lie flat.
- Peeling clear coat, powder coat, or a fresh refinish under the weight.
What is Prep N Stick Quick Dry?
Prep N Stick Quick Dry is an acetone-based, fast-evaporating wheel-weight adhesion cleaner made in the USA by CHAOS Moto. It cleans the bond area before a stick-on wheel weight goes on. It is free of TCE and perc and safe for all wheel finishes, including custom paint and clear coats. Its advantage is speed. Customers report that one 32 oz bottle covers about 100 to 150 wheels, depending on wheel condition, leftover adhesive tape, and heavy dirt. That is a customer-reported estimate, not a bench test.
Quick Dry is flammable. It is acetone-based, has a flash point below 10F, and ships as DOT UN1090, Hazard Class 3, Packing Group II. Keep it away from heat, sparks, and open flame, use it with ventilation, gloves, and eye protection, and follow the safety data sheet.
Order it on the Prep N Stick Quick Dry page or see where to buy for distributors and volume orders. It is not sold on Amazon.
Common questions
Can I put a stick-on wheel weight back on after it falls off?
We do not recommend it. The tape on a weight that came off is already contaminated and has lost its bond. Clean the bond area, apply a new weight, and recheck the balance, because the missing weight's position was part of the balance.
Does brake cleaner help wheel weights stick?
Brake cleaner was built for brake parts, not for the spot where a weight has to bond, and formulas vary from can to can. Check the SDS of the exact product. A cleaner made for wheel-weight prep takes the guesswork out of that step.
Why do weights fall off new or freshly refinished wheels?
New wheels can carry handling oils and residue from shipping and storage, and a fresh or flaking coating gives the tape a weak layer to hold. Clean every wheel before a weight goes on, new or not, and test specialty or refinished finishes in an inconspicuous spot first.
What does CHAOS make for this?
Prep N Stick Quick Dry, a wheel-weight adhesion cleaner. It is acetone-based, free of TCE and perc, safe for all wheel finishes including custom paint and clear coats, and needs no water rinse after the final prep.
