What is Bubble Check?

A spray-on leak detector for tires and shop air systems

Bubble Check is a ready-to-use liquid that a technician sprays onto a pressurized tire, valve or air fitting. Escaping gas passes through the film and forms a bubble at the exact point of the leak. No mixing, no dunk tank, no removal of the wheel from the vehicle to start the diagnosis.

Non-flammable Water and a surfactant. That is close to the whole story.

Composition Water at 80 to 95 percent, surfactant at 1 to 10 percent. The specific surfactant is the formulator's trade secret and is listed that way on the safety data sheet.
pH at 25C 7.0 to 8.0, neutral
Flash point Above 200F. Non-flammable.
Physical state Clear colorless liquid, mild odor, completely soluble in water
Specific gravity About 1.0, or 8.33 pounds per gallon at 20C
Foam behavior Low foam by design. The solution stays flat until gas moves through it, so the bubble that forms marks the leak instead of coating the whole wheel.
Storage 40F to 90F. There is no glycol in it, so it freezes. Do not leave it in a service van overnight in winter.

What does it actually find?

Seven leaks in the tire and wheel, four in the air system that fills it

The physics is the same in every case. Pressurized gas escaping through a gap too small to see becomes visible the moment a low-foam film is over it.

In the tire and wheel

  • Inner bead seat, the leak that survives a repair and brings the vehicle back.
  • Outer bead seat, where corrosion on an aluminum rim breaks the seal with no visible damage to the tire.
  • Valve stem base, where the stem passes through the rim.
  • Valve core, sprayed straight down the open stem.
  • Tread punctures, including the second puncture a first repair missed.
  • Sidewall damage, confirming whether a scuff went through.
  • Wheel crack verification, before a wheel is condemned.

In the compressed-air system

Bubble Check is water-based and pH neutral, and the detection mechanism does not depend on which gas is escaping. Shop compressed air is a supported use.

  • Quick-couplers, the most common leak point in any shop.
  • Hoses and fittings, including crimps, swivels and reel housings.
  • Receiver tanks, drain valves and regulators.
  • The tire machine's own air lines, including bead blasters and clamp cylinders.

Why does the low-foam formulation matter?

Bubbles form at the leak, not everywhere

A leak-detection solution that foams on contact covers the whole wheel in white and reports nothing. Bubble Check is formulated to stay flat until gas passes through the film. That is the single functional difference a technician notices, and it is why the diagnosis takes seconds instead of a second pass.

How is it used in a bay?

The sequence, in order

  1. Inflate the tire to the placard pressure. A soft tire hides its own leak.
  2. Spray the valve core first, straight down the open stem.
  3. Spray the stem base where it passes through the rim.
  4. Spray the outboard bead line all the way around.
  5. Turn the wheel out and repeat on the inboard bead line.
  6. Wet the tread and look across it at a low angle rather than straight down.
  7. Mark every bubble before the wheel moves.
The workflow advantage, stated plainly. The diagnosis happens with the tire still on the vehicle, so the leak is found before the wheel comes off. No dunk tank is required, which is why the technical data sheet lists mobile tire service and roadside assistance among the recommended applications. The product is ready to use with no mixing.

Where does it not go?

Exclusions, stated plainly

Never Oxygen and oxygen-enriched systems. Do not use Bubble Check on oxygen or nitrox service of any kind, including scuba, paintball oxygen service and medical oxygen. Leak-detection fluid for oxygen service requires oxygen-service certification that CHAOS does not hold. Shops that fill dive or paintball cylinders may use it on the shop air side only.

Refrigerant, propane and natural gas lines. CHAOS does not claim these uses today. Gas codes and corrugated stainless steel tubing manufacturers require a chloride-free leak solution, and the chloride content of the proprietary surfactant is not disclosed on the safety data sheet. Until the formulator provides that statement in writing, we will not imply a use we cannot stand behind.

Freezing. The formula contains no glycol. It freezes. Store it between 40F and 90F.

What about hazard classification?

One place we are not filling in the blank

The Bubble Check technical data sheet and safety data sheet do not currently agree on GHS classification. Until the formulator reconciles them, CHAOS will not describe this product as non-hazardous and will not lean on the stricter reading either. The working guidance is the conservative one: eye protection, gloves and normal ventilation, per the technical data sheet. If your safety program needs a definitive classification before it can approve a product, ask us and we will get you the reconciled document rather than an opinion. The safety data sheet governs handling, storage, first aid and disposal.
